About Me

My photo
Delicate designs with an illustrative edge - highly detailed surface pattern and illustration, inspired by life and created with love. Sarah Fleming is a graduate of Cleveland College of Art & Design, where she studied Textiles and Surface Design, specialising in design for the home furnishings and greetings market. Inspired by the detail and beautiful patterns found in nature and her surroundings, Sarah is motivated to achieve beautiful, highly informative observational drawings. She showed an interest in Art from a very early age and has developed a great passion for Textiles and Surface Design. This huge passion spurs her on to work extremely hard, full of enthusiasm to create new and exciting design ideas. Sarah has developed a detailed, tight drawing style which helps her to achieve her beautiful observational drawings. However, she is also able to work in a very sketchy, illustrative style too - showing her as a very versatile designer, capable of adapting where relevant to confidently produce designs for both the commercial and more niche markets. Feature Friday - Mel Smith

This week I would like to share with you the stunning work of Mel Smith.

I discovered Mel's work through twitter and fell in love instantly!
Her brilliant use of colour combined with her ditsy, feminine patterns make such appealing designs appropriate for all ages.

Mel sells her beautiful designs on a variety of products including wallpaper, art prints, cards, iPhone cases, laptop skins and magnets. She sells through a variety of online stores, including Society 6, Folksy, Wallpapered.com and Etsy.

I love the colour palette and pattern on the iPhone cover below. This is one of my favourite designs by Mel Smith; it's fresh and sophisticated but with a playful edge.

Mel is a graduate of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design e-course.

She has gone on to become a successful surface pattern designer, having designs sold in John Lewis stores and boutiques.
Mel has also had her work featured on many blogs and in magazines - including the world renowned Print and Pattern book.

I particularly love Mel's Christmas designs, some of which I have shown below.
I find it difficult to choose a favourite as I really like them all. Again, her use of colour and pattern are just fabulous, creating designs that appeal to people of all ages!

Internship in Aus

A few weeks ago, through the powers of Twitter, a company in Australia found me and loved my work!
We shared a few tweets back and forth, which ultimately led to receiving a phone call when I was offered the chance to intern with them.

Belladonna Digital Imaging, based just outside of Melbourne, offer bespoke interior print services for the home and work place. Using the latest print technology, the company can print images onto a wide range of media including paper, fabrics, canvas, ceramic tiles, leather and glass.

I am so excited for the opportunity to intern with this lovely company and see how the industry works on the other side of the world!
Whilst there, I will be drawing and producing designs as well as being included in meetings with suppliers, clients and other companies based in Australia which is such a privilege and a really exciting prospect.

I will be going for a month in February so stay tuned for more info and posts!!

Feature Friday - Publisher Textiles

I discovered Publisher Textiles through twitter earlier this month and instantly fell in love with their designs!

Started in 2002, Publisher Textiles is a hand screen print company based in Sydney, Australia.
10 years on, they are one of the leading wallpaper print companies in Australia.

Designs begin with hand drawn illustrations by owner Mark Cawood which are then developed into patterns, applied to silk screens and screen printed by hand.
This hands on process is what draws me to their designs; I have always loved screen printing, and the detail and care that is put into Publisher Textiles' prints is fantastic!

Publisher Textiles' wallpaper and fabric collections are printed with eco friendly water based inks.

Concepts for their collections begin from a range of different genres - people, geometrics, music, art nouveau, florals, nature and sci-fi.
These different starting points of inspiration add even further interest to their bold, flamboyant designs!

Feature Friday - JLW Illustration

Today I am showcasing the gorgeous work of my lovely twitter friend JLW Illustration.

Jennie-Louise Whitham is the face behind JLW Illustration.
Jennie is a graduate of LCAD where she studied Textiles & Surface Design.
This degree and completion of 'The Art and Business of Surface Pattern' e-course has developed Jennie into a brilliant designer.

Below are a few snippets from her fantastic portfolio of work...

I am drawn to Jen's work through her use of bold colour; her palettes are always fresh and easy on the eye.
I also love how she manages to combine florals with geometrics so effortlessly and effectively!

Jennie pushes the boundaries of surface pattern with her design work; continually coming up with something new and quirky.
Her work is always on-trend and eye-catching!

Her dedication to her design work and love for all things surface pattern is definitely infectious and I feel very inspired whenever I see her work.
