About Me

My photo
Delicate designs with an illustrative edge - highly detailed surface pattern and illustration, inspired by life and created with love. Sarah Fleming is a graduate of Cleveland College of Art & Design, where she studied Textiles and Surface Design, specialising in design for the home furnishings and greetings market. Inspired by the detail and beautiful patterns found in nature and her surroundings, Sarah is motivated to achieve beautiful, highly informative observational drawings. She showed an interest in Art from a very early age and has developed a great passion for Textiles and Surface Design. This huge passion spurs her on to work extremely hard, full of enthusiasm to create new and exciting design ideas. Sarah has developed a detailed, tight drawing style which helps her to achieve her beautiful observational drawings. However, she is also able to work in a very sketchy, illustrative style too - showing her as a very versatile designer, capable of adapting where relevant to confidently produce designs for both the commercial and more niche markets. SARAH FLEMING is fundraising for Cancer Research UK

SARAH FLEMING is fundraising for Cancer Research UK in memory of my school friend Emily who lost her battle with leukemia aged 19 and for a close family member who is now in recovery. Please spare anything that you can to raise money for a great cause. Many Thanks!

Print Source NYC

Here's a few of my designs that have been chosen for Print Source New York.
The trip is edging nearer and the excitement is definitely setting in; it is such an amazing chance not only to exhibit work but to hand out some CVs/business cards, network with industry professionals and attend the fantastic seminars! I am going to take full advantage of the opportunity to see both the work at the show and the sights around the city. I have visited before but I can't wait to explore some more!!

Feature in Selvedge magazine

Beth Smith, the editor of Selvedge magazine recently contacted CCAD about a feature on 2012 graduating textile students.

"Our 46th issue will be the “Souvenir Issue”, obviously we will be touching on the Jubilee but also textile techniques that are traditional and have stood the test of time. For our student feature we would like to invite students from as many colleges as possible to create a souvenir handkerchief or scarf that represents their college or university. Students can draw on their own experiences of student life but we would like them to try and encapsulate the atmosphere of their college too. Please bear in mind that, although we encourage students demonstrate their signature style, a traditional look may represent your college in a way that is easier for Selvedge readers to understand."

I am very pleased to report that I have been one of the few chosen to design a scarf for the feature and here is my entry:

My ideas behind the design

- CCAD in the middle as they have been central to my development as a person and a designer
- Crowns and Union Jack as a reference to The Queen and Her Diamond Jubillee
- Floral background showing my drawings/designs with a reference to how I have blossomed during my time at CCAD

FMP update

I have had a busy few weeks so apologies for not updating for a while!
I turned 21 at the weekend and my brother also received an award for his degree so there were a lot of family celebrations. I also spent the day in London yesterday where I visited Liberty's, King's Road and Chelsea Harbour Design Centre as part of London Design Week. Chelsea Harbour was full to the brim with lovely new designs - I always enjoy looking in Harlequin, Zoffany Sanderson, Cole & Son and Romo, I aspire to the high quality of designs that they all produce!
The day was full of inspiration and I came home feeling eager to get on with my design work :)

I am well on my way with development and have produced a few final designs which I am really pleased with. These designs are beautiful screen printed and hand-rendered designs aimed more at the commercial market, some of which I hope to exhibit at Print Source in New York when I go in April. However, to show my versatility and challenge myself as a designer I am currently working on some more exciting, experimental designs! More info on that coming soon :)

See below three of the designs I am in the process of putting the final touches to...
