About Me

My photo
Delicate designs with an illustrative edge - highly detailed surface pattern and illustration, inspired by life and created with love. Sarah Fleming is a graduate of Cleveland College of Art & Design, where she studied Textiles and Surface Design, specialising in design for the home furnishings and greetings market. Inspired by the detail and beautiful patterns found in nature and her surroundings, Sarah is motivated to achieve beautiful, highly informative observational drawings. She showed an interest in Art from a very early age and has developed a great passion for Textiles and Surface Design. This huge passion spurs her on to work extremely hard, full of enthusiasm to create new and exciting design ideas. Sarah has developed a detailed, tight drawing style which helps her to achieve her beautiful observational drawings. However, she is also able to work in a very sketchy, illustrative style too - showing her as a very versatile designer, capable of adapting where relevant to confidently produce designs for both the commercial and more niche markets. Feature Friday - Funky Wombat Textiles

I'm so excited to share with you the fantastic work of Funky Wombat Textiles this week!
I am fairly new to their designs but I am just in awe of the brilliant drawing and patterns in all of their work and wanted to share a few of my favourites with you all.
Funky Wombat Textiles is a surface pattern and design studio based in Melbourne, launched by the extremely talented Tamara Schneider.
They create contemporary, sophisticated patterns for the Interiors and Homeware market, drawing inspiration from a wide range of themes including architecture, nature, colour and historical textile design.

What first drew me to Funky Wombat Textiles' work was the brilliant drawings that make up their designs. For example, the drawing above of the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo. The detail captured in the drawing is just incredible; they look so lifelike, I can't wait to see how they are developed into a design!

Funky Wombat Textiles creates unique patterns for both hard and soft surfaces to be used in both home and commercial spaces. Their ranges of fabric, wallpaper and lampshades are digitally printed and manufactured within Australia, and are made to order.

The beautiful hand drawn imagery is put together to create the most stunning designs, like above.
Not only do I love the imagery, but the use of colour. I'm not usually one for bright colours but the King Parrot in this design is so eye-catching, working perfectly with the simple yet sophisticated branches of leaves in the background.

I wish I had come across Funky Wombat Textiles sooner, I feel their work would have been a fantastic inspiration for my projects during University. I feel our styles are quite similar in the way that I too enjoy drawing quite literal images, capturing lots of detail in a very sophisticated way.
I think the Wild Animals design above has to be my favourite! Although not typically detailed like the ones up above, the imagery is still beautiful and the colour palette is gorgeous! The different layers of animals and florals/foliage creates interest and the feel of the safari - searching for more wildlife the further in you go.
Fantastic hey?!

And now I have got you all hooked on their designs, be sure to visit:
